Mura e Baluardo di San Martino

The bastion of S. Martino was founded in the sixteenth century, during the realization of the fortification thought by the Duke Francesco Maria I from the Rovere. The bastion is the most innovative element of the fortification built in the first half of the sixteenth century: put at one of the summit of the pentagonal fortification, it was intended as a “modern” defensive system which included right angles at the union of the curtains and acute angles at the external side.

By the walls once run a moat, dried when the defensive causes which had determined the creation came to less. During the nineteenth century appeared evident that the vegetable garden obtained in this way, lowest of three meters above the country level, didn’t allowed the outflow of the water making, just near the habitations, unhealthy stagnation, which in 1885 determined the filling of it. For the same reasons, in 1920 started the burial of the Penna and the creation of its own bed of IV Novembre Street.
