On Wednesday, October 16, at 6:00 PM, the M.A.D. Mail Art Day 2024 exhibition curated by Ruggero Maggi will open at the MAM in Montecarotto. Mayor Giuseppe Paoloni, Cultural Councillor Silvia Pieralisi, MAM Director and curator Stefano Schiavoni, and artist Ruggero Maggi will attend.

The MAM Museum of Modern Art and Mail Art in Montecarotto has been active since 1984, conceived and founded by Carlo Emanuele Bugatti at the behest of the Montecarotto City Administration, as part of an innovative “diffused museum” project in the former Province of Ancona. The museum has a longstanding collaboration with the Musinf in Senigallia, inaugurated in 1981, the Nori dè Nobili Municipal Museum of Tre Castelli, and other museums in the Marche region and throughout Italy.

The M.A.D. Mail Art Day | October 16 | International Mail Art Day project was launched at the end of 2022 by Ruggero Maggi to commemorate Ray Johnson, born on October 16 and known as “the most famous unknown artist in New York.” By founding the New York Correspondence School in 1962 and mocking the various art-by-mail schools that were sprouting up across the U.S., he marked the explosive Big Bang of Mail Art.

The event brings together some projects curated by Ruggero Maggi during 2024:

MAIL ART, ART IN THE TRENCHES, a Mail Art meeting held on May 8 in Venice at Spazio Thetis, attended by American mail artist Chuck Welch (aka CrackerJack Kid), American visual-verbal artist Willie Marlowe, Spazio Thetis representative Antonietta Grandesso, Paolo Rizzi ETS Cultural Association President Piergiorgio Baroldi, MAM Director Stefano Schiavoni, and artist Ruggero Maggi. A video by Eloise Sherrid and Lauryn Welch will also be screened at the MAM.

MAIL ART POETRY – POETRY IS RESISTANCE, a Mail Art project as part of the first international biennial of experimental poetry in Argentina, POSVERSO. This project highlights poetry and resistance, exploring the enduring power of poetry even in adverse conditions, such as during war.

UTSANGA, a project celebrating the 10 years of work and research of the magazine Utsanga, founded by Francesco Aprile and Cristiano Caggiula in 2014, which combines visual poetry and mail art. The project involves exhibitions at various venues, featuring hundreds of international artists.

OIMA (International Organization of Mail Artists), an international project for a reduced postal rate for mail art, symbolically established on September 13, 2023, by Maya Lopez Muro, César Reglero Campos, and Ruggero Maggi, calling on postal authorities to recognize the importance of affordable mail art rates.

SAVE ARTPOOL, an open appeal to the artistic community to preserve the Artpool collection and protect the legacy of its founders, Hungarian networkers Julia Klaniczay and György Galántai.
