The great international art photography is back in Senigallia. After the success of Ara Guler and Leo Matiz exhibitions, from 29 March to 2 September 2018, Palazzo del Duca in Senigallia will host the retrospective exhibition “Robert Doisneau: le Temps Retrouvé”, dedicated to the famous French photographer. A pioneer of street photography and reportage, Doisneau strongly had a very strong influence on contemporary culture, becoming one of its symbols.
The event is organized by the Municipality of Senigallia, in collaboration with Atelier Robert Doisneau and with the sponsorship of Fondazione della Cassa di Risparmio di Jesi, and is cured by ONOartecontemporanea
This unique event consecrates Senigallia as the City of Photography, capable of attracting the most prestigious international exhibitions. The city is a full member of the network of territories that have converted art and photography in a valuable feature of their cultural identity.
It’s also thanks to Doisneau if today we consider the ordinary man as the protagonist of photography, with irony and self-determination, if we celebrate street photography as the epitome of modernity and street culture as the most authentic expression of the contemporary world.
Doisneau is a contemporary artist par excellence because in spite of the appearance, his photos are never occasional or “stolen”. Many of them were studied up to the last detail. His images dissimulate a naturalness that was instead a “set”, pioneering the modern language of photography. If we think about the recent trends of contemporary fashion and advertising photography – which imitate the language of the Internet and of the social media, where daily life is skilfully created with a spontaneity that is only pretended, mixing high and low, formal and informal – we can understand that Doisneau was ahead of his time. Even the famous photo “Le Baiser de l'hôtel de ville”, which may seem a random shot at first sight, was posed. After all, Doisneau came from the world of graphic art and advertising. It was in such a context that he learned to compose images in a legible way for the human eye. So, “Le Baiser de l'hôtel de ville” is the result of a wise artistic background. While he was making a reportage for the American magazine “Life”, he asked a couple of passers-by to kiss. And so they did, giving life to one of the most iconic images of the history of photography.
The exhibition “Robert Doisneau: le Temps Retrouvé” narrates the work of the French photographer and artist through fifty of his most iconic photos with many of his popular themes: children, streets, public places, daily life, and also the great protagonists of the mid-20th century culture, alongside with craftsmen, workshops, suburbs and countryside.
