Storico

Area Archeologica La Fenice

Description

Literally speaking, the immersion in history can start from Area Archeologica La Fenice (La Fenice Archaeological Site) where you can meet with settings, objects and daily life of the Romans living in ancient Sena. Today La Fenice archaeological site is one of the few places in Italy where visitors can admire the ruins of Roman buildings and the findings found on site at the same time. It’s a fascinating place, a unique evocative stage that every year hosts Senigallia sotterranea (Senigallia underground), a festival with a rich program of events from theatre to literature, including archeology.

Going back to road level, just cross the street and take a huge jump across time to Museo Comunale d'Arte Moderna, dell'Informazione e della Fotografia -  MUSINF (Municipal Museum of Modern Art, Information and Photography). Created in 1981 according to a project designed by critic Carlo Emanuele Bugatti and supported by artists such as Virgilio Guidi, Umberto Mastroianni, and Orfeo Tamburi, MUSINF documents the relation between words and images as information binomial, paying special attention to the use of photography as artistic expression and information support. Especially interesting are the section dedicated to "Scuola Fotografica Misa" and a complete anthological collection of two hundred and fifty photographs by Mario Giacomelli, an internationally renowned photographer, with some of his most famous series, such as  “Scanno”, “Io non ho mani che mi accarezzino il viso”, or the shots of the famous  “little priests” playing in their black soutanes.

Then you can continue towards Piazza Garibaldi where, on 16 May 1992, Palazzo vescovile (Archbishop’s Palace) became the seat of Pinacoteca diocesana (Diocesan Gallery) with very important art works from 16th - 19th centuries. The gem of the art collection is La Madonna del Rosario e San Domenico (the Virgin of the Rosary and Saint Dominic) by Federico Barocci (1535-1612), painted between 1588 and 1592 for Confraternita dell'Assunta e del Rosario (Confraternity of the Lady of Assumption and Rosary) for Chiesa di San Rocco (church of Saint Roch).

After crossing the beautiful piazza Garibaldi towards the historical centre, right behind the Town Hall, you will find Palazzo Mastai-Ferretti, where Pope Pius IX, in the world Giovanni Maria Mastai Ferretti, was born. The palace rooms are rich in paintings, memorabilia, engravings and documents. Pope Pius IX is also remembered for the longest pontificate in history (32 years from 1846 to 1878) and for being the last Italian Pope King.

The museum itinerary ends with  Museo comunale di Storia della Mezzadria “Sergio Anselmi” (Sharecropping Museum), a few kilometers from the historical centre of Senigallia, just a few minutes away by car or public bus. The museum is hosted in a wing of Santa Maria delle Grazie, a convent situated in a charming, panoramic position on the hills. Two thousand objects are exhibited in thirty museum sections, each one dedicated to a specific topic. Visitors are taken through the different steps of agricultural life: oil presses, wheat sorting machines, tools for repairs, kitchen tools, looms, hempen cloth and a large wine cellar in the basement. It’s a journey in the memories and emotions of a rural society and a cultural heritage that belongs to each one of us.
