Description

The  church and convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie is situated on a splendid hill view a panoramic view, just a few kilometres from the centre of Senigallia, a few minutes away by car or bus. Giovanni Della Rovere, lord of Senigallia, supervised the construction works of the convent and the church, although he never saw them completed. In his will, his first desire was the continuation of the works because the place was meant to be his family tomb. Giovanni Della Rovere was buried in 1501 in the sacristy, where we can admire a precious basin, finely manufactured in the 15th century. Before him, his mother Teodora Manerola, one of his daughters, Girolama, who died very young, and his brother-in law Antonello Sanseverino were buried here.

A day spent in the convent and in the church  is a fascinating immersion in the peace and silence of a place full of history in the elegant patio and among the valuable artworks of the church. A wing of the convent is dedicated to Museo di Storia della Mezzadria "Sergio Anselmi” (Sharecropping Museum) which concludes our visit on the hills.

The museum was opened to the public in 1978 upon the initiative of professor Sergio Anselmi and contains a rich collection of objects and documents from the local rural society. The halls showcase objects that describe the sharecropping method which was very popular in the Marche region in the 14th and 15th centuries, marking the culture of the local territory. It is an emotional experience and a dive in the past through thirty halls dedicated to different fields of activity, amongst oil mills, looms, mowing machines, wooden/iron plows, and wine cellar tools.
